The country is increasingly for sale to the ultra-wealthy.</p><p>I believe that the states are our last bastion of defense against this assault on democracy and our social systems. It will be the states that lead the charge in rebuilding a healthy, robust society where people can aspire and flourish.</p><p><strong>I want to be a part of that process—and I want to do it for <em>all</em> Ohioans, not just those who vote for me. </strong>The challenges we face don't belong to one side of the aisle, and neither do the solutions. Real change takes collaboration, and I'm committed to doing the hard work of building it.</p>

But the daily chores and the<strong> summers filled with field work taught me something far more valuable than I realized at the time: self-sufficiency, a deep sense of responsibility, and an unshakeable belief that some things just <em>have</em> to be done.</strong> Failure or dereliction is simply not an option. Those lessons have followed me throughout my life.&nbsp;</p><p>After high school, a lifelong interest in politics led to a degree in political science from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.&nbsp;From there, I spent four years as a communications specialist in the U.S. Navy—<strong>an experience that sharpened my discipline and broadened my sense of the world.</strong>&nbsp;I then earned an advanced degree in foreign trade from the American Graduate School of International&nbsp;Management in Arizona. An ad in the <em>Wall Street Journal</em> led me to Bryan, Ohio, as the export manager for a local pharmaceutical company. I’ve been here&nbsp;ever since.&nbsp;<br></p><span class="image image-framed image-left" style="width: 40%;"><span class="image-inner-wrapper"><img src="https://run.imgix.net/4370fd70-5c8e-4e35-8060-86928b652a4b/2d82d9a0-6bd8-4b3b-9242-ec3f19aa1fd4/2d82d9a0-6bd8-4b3b-9242-ec3f19aa1fd4.jpg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C343%2C2781%2C2371&amp;w=1500" alt="Daavlin booth at the AAD" caption="" align="left" alignwidth="40" variant="framed"></span><span class="caption" style="display: none;"></span></span><p>In 1981, my first wife and I welcomed a daughter, and&nbsp;a few months later, we founded Daavlin, a manufacturer of medical products sold to dermatologists throughout the world. Starting with little more than grit and a dream, we built Daavlin into the predominant player in the photo-therapeutic market for skin diseases such as psoriasis and vitiligo. Today, the company employs over a hundred people. <strong>Nurturing something from nothing teaches lessons no classroom can: relentless persistence, unwavering dedication, and a mind that stays open even when the path is uncertain.</strong><br></p><p>My first marriage ended, and in the years that followed, I met and married my second wife, Dee, who brought two young daughters to our new family. Dee passed away in 2008, leaving a mark on our family that endures to this day. I'm also raising a boutique hotel in the building next door, which will soon welcome visitors to experience the vibrant community taking shape here.</p><p>Beyond business, I've been a longtime and avid supporter of the arts, served on the board of the Bryan Hospital for several years, and currently serve on the Chairman's Circle of Advisors at the Johns Hopkins Hospital department of dermatology.</p><p>Northwest Ohio provided both the opportunity and the foundation that I needed to build a strong company and a meaningful&nbsp;life. I am a great fan of this place—its people, its potential, and its future. If elected, <strong>I will bring the same work ethic I learned on that dairy farm to the work of ensuring that everyone has a fair shot at the blessings this state has to offer.</strong> I won't just be a representative for those who voted for me—I'll work every day for <em>every</em> Ohioan. <p><strong>The greatest threat to our democracy is the systematic dismantling of reasonable, convenient access to the voting booth.</strong> Indiscriminate purging of registered voter files, the reduction in early voting days, and the elimination of same-day registration and voting have had a chilling effect on the ability of many to vote, particularly minorities and the elderly. The SAVE America Act is now taking aim at women. Dressed up as safeguards, these changes are thinly disguised attempts to impede voters who may typically vote as independents. They are barriers to the fundamental foundation of our republic: the right to vote.</p>

He has spent decades building his life and business in northwest Ohio, and says those roots are exactly why he's running.</p><p>"The American middle class is under attack," Swanson said. "Values that we have held sacred for generations are being trampled. I want to be a part of rebuilding a healthy, robust society where people can aspire and flourish, and I want to do it for all Ohioans, not just those who vote for me."</p><p>Growing up on a dairy farm as the oldest of six children, Swanson learned early that failure and dereliction are simply not options. After earning a degree in Political Science from the University of Puget Sound and serving four years in the U.S. Navy, he earned a Master's degree in International Trade from the American Graduate School of International Management in Phoenix, Arizona. He then came to Bryan, Ohio as an export manager for a local pharmaceutical company and never left.</p><p>In 1981, he co-founded Daavlin and built it into the predominant player in the photo-therapeutic market for skin diseases such as psoriasis and vitiligo. In recent years, he has helped lead a downtown revival in Bryan, rehabilitating historic buildings on the square and opening a new restaurant, with a boutique hotel underway next door.</p><p>Swanson points to Ohio's Republican supermajority as a government that has failed to deliver on the core concerns of working families in western Ohio. He is running on a platform built around four priorities: Food, Housing, Healthcare, and Education.</p><p>"The challenges we face don't belong to one side of the aisle, and neither do the solutions," Swanson said. "Real change takes collaboration, and I'm committed to doing the hard work of building it."</p><p>Swanson acknowledges that both parties have at times failed to prioritize the working-class Ohioans they were elected to serve. He is running to return the Democratic Party to its roots: fighting for kitchen-table issues that affect everyday families, from the family farmer to the factory worker to the parents trying to keep their kids in a good school.</p><p>"Northwest Ohio provided both the opportunity and the foundation that I needed to build a strong company and a meaningful life," Swanson said. "If elected, I will bring the same work ethic I learned on that dairy farm to the work of ensuring that everyone has a fair shot at the blessings this state has to offer, with honesty, fairness, and decency."</p><p>Swanson has also served on the board of the Bryan Hospital and currently serves on the Chairman's Circle of Advisors at the Johns Hopkins Hospital department of dermatology. <p><strong>The elimination of ACA subsidies and the ongoing cuts to Medicaid will cause a wave of insurance premium increases that will ripple through our state for years to come.</strong> As the pool of insured people shrinks, costs will be redistributed in a vicious cycle to those who remain. Even large organizations such as unions, corporations, and governmental entities will feel the pain.&nbsp;There is a secondary effect of this problem: More and more people will become vulnerable to financial ruin in the event of an accident or an illness. There are workable solutions. In some states virtually all citizens are covered by healthcare, but it will take political will to achieve this for Ohio. I will make it a primary objective of my service to safeguard Ohio's public against the devastation of unaffordable, out-of-reach healthcare.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Healthcare</h2>

<p><strong>Billions of tax dollars are being diverted from our public schools to non-traditional educational systems.</strong> Charter schools and private schools are a mixed bag when it comes to educational outcomes, and the voucher system is little more than a subsidy to the well-to-do at the expense of the rest of us. In northwest Ohio, our public schools are a point of pride and a centerpiece of our communities. As a state representative, I will work to fully fund our public schools and to give them the flexibility to react to local needs. We must build upon what we have and not abandon our schools to for-profit organizations or organizations more interested in indoctrination than education.</p>

<h2>Education</h2>

<p><strong>Outdated zoning, arcane local rules and complicated incentives have put a stranglehold on affordable housing development in Ohio.</strong>&nbsp; Large developers with the capital and sophistication to navigate these obstacles are not interested in rural areas and small developers are often faced with the unwillingness of banks to finance them. Other regions of the country have solved these problems through more efficient land use and state-sponsored loan guarantees that make banks more willing to lend.</p>
